The men you choose to be a part of your wedding party are for the most part your closest friends. Categorizing them into best man, the groomsmen, and ushers is one of the harder decisions you’ll have to make. But luckily, there’s no limit to the number of ushers or groomsmen (except maybe the size of your altar). In fact, there’s no law that says you can’t have more than one best man, or that you can’t have a woman in your wedding party. In making your decision, however, you’ll want to remember that each job comes with its own responsibilities and implications.

The Best Man

Your best man should be someone you can count on to make sure everything runs smoothly. It’s customary to choose your brother or your best friend for the job. You may even give the honor to your father. The best man’s main responsibilities are:

  • Planning the bachelor party.
  • Attending the rehearsal.
  • His own tuxedo rental.
  • Helping you get dressed on the day of the wedding.
  • Standing with you at the altar.
  • Presenting the bride’s ring.
  • Serving as one of two witnesses signing the marriage license.
  • Giving the officiate his or her "gift" before the ceremony.
  • Proposing the first toast during the wedding reception.
  • Returning your tuxedo the day after the wedding.

You may also want to ask him to handle tasks, including:

  • Making sure the men in the wedding are fitted for tuxedos.
  • Picking up out-of-town guests, at the airport.
  • Arranging for your transportation after the reception.
  • Packing your luggage in the car and filling it with gas.
  • Making sure the other groomsmen return their formalwear.

The Groomsmen:

Your other brothers, your fiancée’s brothers or any of your close friends can serve as groomsmen. Each will be paired up with a bridesmaid whom your fiancée has chosen. The groomsmen’s responsibilities include the following:

  • Co-hosting the bachelor party.
  • Renting their own tuxedos.
  • Attending the rehearsal.

The Ushers:

Friends and relatives can serve as ushers. You will want to have at least one usher for every 40 to 50 guests. The usher’s responsibilities are as follows:

  • Escorting people to their seats- your guests on the right side of the chapel, the bride’s on the left.
  • Offering a helping hand to the florist, photographer, musicians, or anyone needing last minute assistance.
  • Helping out-of-town guests find transportation from wedding to the reception.

The Ring Bearer

A younger brother, relative or friend who is between 4 and 10 years old is a perfect addition to your wedding party. He walks in the processional and carries a small white pillow with a ring sewn on (not necessarily the wedding ring). An especially young ring bearer who might not make it down the aisle can stand in the pew with his parents and be included in any wedding portraits.

Questions and Answers

When is the best time to book formalwear?

We advise booking as early as possible, especially if you are looking to rent during May through September to ensure you get the style you desire.

Booking four months in advance is advisable. We require all selections, measurements and payments no later than three weeks prior to your wedding.

April, May and June compete with prom events so book early.

Choosing a formalwear specialist

.

Decide on the level of quality and service you desire. Don’t choose a cut-rate tuxedo or retailer. You are paying for service as well as garment rental so be sure of the service you are getting……or not getting.

Look at the reputation and quality of your alternatives. Rent from a shop that specializes in formalwear. Look for the important details, such as: experience and knowledgeable personnel to guide you in proper etiquette and customs.

Look for a retailer who carries current styles.

Ask if stock is replaced on a regular basis.

Does everyone need to be there when we book?

No, it isn’t advisable to have your whole party present. It is much easier to come in alone or with your fiancée when making formalwear choices.

How do we select a style?

Spend time looking through magazines, catalogs, and the Internet to fine styles that appeal to you.

The bride and groom should share their ideas on what her attendants will be wearing and how the formalwear can compliment the overall look you want to achieve.

How can the groom’s attendants compliment the brides?

The bride has many choices in accessories that will highlight the colors she has chosen for her bridesmaids. You may select ties, vests or cummerbunds that will compliment her color choices. A color swatch can be match to assure color compatibility.

Should shoes be rented?

Yes. In order to maintain consistency and complete the formal look, we suggest you rent shoes.

Footwear is professionally cleaned and maintained to high standards.

Why be measured by a formalwear specialist?

It is essential in ensuring you get the proper fit.

Properly fitted formalwear is a must for comfort and look.

Ask for a trained, knowledgeable fitter.

Do we need a final fit?

Yes. Final fittings are conducted to ensure you have received a proper fit and overall satisfaction.

Final fits give you the opportunity to learn valuable tips on the proper way to wear your tux.

On-site tailoring means alterations may be made if necessary.

Final fittings are done at the time you pick up your rental.

I’m getting married and the groomsmen are located in different cities. What do I do about renting tuxedos?

Resist the urge to have out-of-town attendants bring tuxedos with them. We will help simplify the process by providing measurement cards for your groomsmen who will then visit a formalwear specialist in any town or city for accurate measurements. Tuxedo shop professionals will take measurements for free. Out of town clients should phone, fax, email or mail their measurements to our store where the information will be used in booking the tuxedos.

Black Tie Invited

What does "Black Tie Invited" mean?

Every man in the wedding party, and the male guests are encouraged to wear a black tuxedo. Your wedding day can look as grand as all the memorable Hollywood weddings. Three little words "Black Tie Invited" can make your day as memorable as the celebrity dream wedding.

What do the ladies wear to a "Black Tie Invited" wedding?

The ladies are encouraged to wear formal gowns or cocktail dresses.

It’s my second wedding and we’re only inviting 50 people is it appropriate to have a black tie wedding?

Weddings are always special occasions. What better way to celebrate a special occasion than by inviting your guests to dress in formal attire? Your guests want to share in your happiness and wearing tuxedos will only enhance the celebration.

Is it really expensive to rent a tuxedo?

There is a wide range of prices to fit every budget. The rental price is based on the make, model and designer name. And, the best thing about formal attire is that no one will know which designer’s tuxedo you are wearing, or how much you paid for your rental. You’ll look and feel like a million bucks.

How can I tell my family I would like a formal wedding?

Formal weddings are back in style. Explain to your closest relatives how special it would make you feel and how great everyone would look if everyone attending your wedding would Go Formal. Tell the guys to think "James Bond". Show them pictures from magazines. Then, print "Black Tie Invited" on your invitations, and watch the excitement build!

Will my family think I'm asking too much of them?

Traditionally, families will go out of their way to make sure the future bride and groom are happy. Most people just wait for the opportunity to get dressed up in their finest apparel. Women will usually purchase a new outfit for a wedding, or will purchase new accessories to update an existing outfit. Men may need to update their suit, or even purchase a new one. A tuxedo rental is less than one third the cost of most men’s new suits. And…we do the dry cleaning the next day. We can help with "guest quality" tuxedos at very reasonable prices.

Do all my guests need to wear black ties with their tuxedos to make it a formal wedding?

Not at all. Your guests can accessorize their tuxedos to create their own look. There are hundreds of vest and tie combinations to choose from, as well as a multitude of shirts and suit cuts to choose from when selecting formalwear. Out of town guests can rent tuxedos from Tuxedos of Lake Tahoe by sending in their measurements and reserving a tux to be picked up when they arrive in town.
